The Highly Sensitive Person | Elaine N. Aron | Book Review
I extremely dislike being sensitive and if you have ever said the same, then you will love this book, ‘The Highly Sensitive Person’. When I read this one, it spoke to me in a soothing, calming voice. It validated my troubles with day to day activities, my meltdowns and my weaknesses. Some people want to believe that sensitivity is an asset but I would not agree to that. It makes us experience unimaginably high highs and lower lows. That,s why it was shocking to read this book that explained to me my patterns so well.
Genetics and Environment
It seems that sensitivity is a trait that can be inherited. Present among 20-30 percent of the population, it may have developed so that a few people in a tribe would think things through before reacting.
Environment however still plays a very important role in the experience one has with their sensitivity. Sensitive children become mature and social adults if they were accepted culturally or if they didn’t have any major problems with their parents and when they weren’t mocked, ridiculed or teased. Attachment styles to parents also play a huge role.
Two brain systems
The author describes about two types of systems of the brain. One is the pause to check and the other was the call to action. In a highly sensitive person, the pause to check system is more active. In some, the call to action system is also active. Such individuals tend to be restless and yet less shy.
when the pause to check system is always active, an individual second guesses everything. they conclude that they can’t do something because they had done it once upon a time and it hadn’t worked out.
What I learnt from The Highly Sensitive Person
Personally being able to connect to a book is really a blessing. An HSP( Highly sensitive person) will feel seen and understood and also understand why they are the way that they are. A world that does not value sensitivity tends to put such people down and the only way out is knowing yourself enough and this book will aide in just that.
The author has included some tools about healing your childhood wounds and understanding your type. ( if you are more in or out)
There are stories of people who have thought they were crazy and turns out they were just HSP. Some people are able to function better than the others but you will not believe if this trait is extreme, one can barely get through life as they overanalyze everything.
Bottom Line of The Highly Sensitive Person
This book has changed the way I think about my trait and it will do this for you too. For anyone who is an HSP, go ahead and grab it.
