The Highly Sensitive Person – 5 things I learnt from it

Recently I read this profound book, The Highly Sensitive Person, that gave me a new understanding of my sensitivity. Below I am sharing the few points that remained with me long after finishing the book. And maybe it will make you read the book too.

Sensitivity has a biological basis.

Sensitivity is not something an individual can control or change. It is as ingrained as the colour of one’s eyes. The sensitive person processes information very thoroughly which accounts for a deep reflection and that very trait is also a drawback. People tend to have two systems in the brain, one is the pause to check and other is the call to action. In sensitive individuals the pause to check system is overactive, making them overanalyse every step.

Depth of processing is a useful tool for the highly sensitive person

An HSP analyses and weighs the pros and cons of every situation, this makes their decision making slow yet well informed. Going into the depths of things makes these individuals more creative and insightful.

Heightened emotional response as a strength

The downside of feeling emotions too deeply is that it can be overwhelming. However, feeling the emotions of oneself as well as others helps the HSPs to have empathy and build deep and profound relationships.

Overstimulation should be handled

Heightened awareness leads to earlier burnout especially when there is too much interaction, noise, crowd or multitasking. This book beautifully highlights the importance of silence, being alone and fostering a calm and relaxing environment whenever possible.

Growth comes with self acceptance

Once an HSP realises that his sensitivity makes his needs differ from the others, he stops trying to keep up with the less sensitive minds. He builds his own path, tailored to his own needs. Career, relationships, personal growth everything is changed to fit him. The first step towards growth and change, begins here.
