World’s Worst Best Girlfriend | Durjoy Datta| Book Review

‘World’s worst best girlfriend’ follows the story of Aanchal, a middle-class girl who has big dreams. Dreams which involve succeeding in life and entering the world of rich people. She is academically gifted and strives to be the best and get admission to a renowned institution.

Her family wins a trip to the Andamans one day, where she comes across Daksh. The rich, nonchalant boy who has everything that he can ask for. Deep down she wishes she was like that too.

Daksh befriends her and soon they start enjoying the trip together. Daksh develops a crush on Aanchal but Aanchal is already dating Vicky. Vicky and her are trying to get into the same college and be together. Aanchal thinks that he is the best choice for her and to not invite any drama and confusion she does not mention Daksh to him.

Daksh becomes her lucky charm and her dear friend. He is always by her side. She calls him up on the day of her result and just as she had wanted, she gets into the college of her dreams.

Soon the seven days of vacation are over and they have to say bye. They wonder if their paths will ever cross and if they will ever meet again.

Four years later, coincidentally their paths meet again and now the tables have turned. Daksh is looking after an ailing father and his younger sister. He is struggling to make ends meet. Aanchal however has a good job and a flourishing career. Both of them yet again are on the opposite ends of a spectrum.

Vicky however has regressed after he failed to get into the same institution as Aanchal. He blames her and calls her names. She puts up with a lot of harassment.

Will Aanchal and Daksh start their story from a new beginning or will they lose what they have in the first place?

My thoughts on the World’s worst best girlfriend

Durjoy Datta’s books mostly seem to be teen reads. Packed with a lot of drama and quite obvious storylines. In fact, this was why I hadn’t read any of his books to date. However, I realized that it wasn’t as bad as I had thought. I can very well say that I sort of liked it.

The storytelling is simple and in an easy language. The characters are well-developed and deep. You will fall in love with the character of Daksh. He is emotional and wears his heart on his sleeve. He is the type that could do anything for the person he loves. You will admire his qualities and find him so adorable when he takes care of his younger sister. You will be proud of him when he steps in and helps Aanchal’s brother who is trying to get into an unconventional career.

Positive points

You will not only appreciate the bond that Aanchal and Daksh share but you will also admire friendships, mother and child relationships, and the bond of a brother and sister. This story seamlessly gets together a variety of human emotions. Supportive friends like Vanita add to the beauty of the story.

The struggle and challenges of choosing a different and unconventional career path in a middle-class family are well portrayed through the story of Aanchal’s brother. Daksh goes to great lengths to support him.

This book talks about abusive relationships and how they can take hold of your life. It portrays how people can manipulate you into staying even when all of your nerve cells want you to run.

The realistic dilemmas faced by Aanchal and the selfish behaviour that makes her seem very human were a delight, to be honest. As a main lead, she is far from perfect and I think that adds to the charm of the story.

Negative points

Sometimes you are left questioning Daksh, you wonder who could be this crazy. So yes, maybe some parts of the story don’t seem realistic. Other parts are exaggerated but overall, I think it delivers what it set out to.

‘World’s worst best girlfriend’ caters more to the younger audience who is in college or maybe in high school still. In an era of flings, it really is suitable for people who do not cringe at words like ‘forever’ and if you are one of those people then don’t hesitate to read this book.
